Local Chapter Education
News
Ricky Hicks, our chapter instructor has
been recognized by the national society in the past couple of years as an
outstanding course leader. INS 23 class just completed with most
students passing the exam. There were 17 students in this excellent
class, which had a very high pass ratio.
As for education, we are also working with our Lynchburg CPCUs at Nationwide
toward more people starting insurance classes. Ricky plans to take a summer
break and looks forward to teaching another class this fall. We want to
encourage everyone to complete the CPD forms and help keep up the ratio
of CPD's to members. Another class will be offered in September after Labor Day.
Good Works Program for 2009

We encourage our members to privately donate as they led directly to the SW VA
Food Bank in the coming weeks. They can note "Blue Ridge CPCU"
in the check documentation line. We have sponsored the SW Food Bank since 1994
as an outreach of our local chapter. Members are encouraged to make their tax
deductible checks payable to SW VA Food Bank and send them
directly to this worthwhile organization. The contact information is as
follows:

CPCU Spread the Word Campaign
Our
chapter encourages you to participate in spreading the
word on the value of the CPCU program. This national campaign
encourages us to promote the value of this professional designation to both an
insurance
professional's career and their employer. The CPCU designation requires
meeting high standards in in education, experience, and ethics. It is a
worthwhile investment for an insurance professional's career. Please share
the value of the CPCU programs in formal presentations or informally with other
insurance professionals.
CPCU Champions Program
CPCU Society champions are members who, due to their level and position
within a firm, can “take the pulse” of the organization and update the Society
about evolving needs and issues. Champions are also asked to facilitate
two-way communications between the Society and their companies. Finally, these
members “champion” the cause of the Society and the CPCU designation throughout
their firm.

CPCU Ethics
Awareness 2009
As a research project, three chapter
newsletters were composed and published during March:
1. What are Ethics and key CPCU resources
2. Large ethical violations - Analysis of Bernie Madoff scandal
3. How even the smallest violations of ethics matter
The 3 newsletters have been consolidated into the following link:
Blue Ridge CPCU - 30+ Years of Excellence

During 1975, several dedicated CPCU
professionals saw the need to create the local CPCU chapter we enjoy today in
Southwestern Virginia. During 2005-2006, our theme centered around
celebrating our 30th anniversary at each of our chapter meetings. On May 11,
2006 we commemorated our 30th anniversary at Mama Maria's Restaurant (one of the
best Italian restaurant's in our local area). David Lowe, Senior Claims Adjuster, St. Paul
Travelers provided an EXCELLENT presentation on "Responding to Disasters".
He shared what it meant to be a Claims Adjustor and provided first hand accounts
in responding to the aftermath for Hurricane Katrina. We had excellent
attendance, fellowship, and even an anniversary cake to celebrate this excellent
milestone.
